Fifth Grade is the first encounter students have with exponents now in Common Core. Base ten exponents are one of the easiest sets to learn for some and the most difficult for others. Hands on practice and review will assist in mastery, not to mention motivating students to learn while they play.
Common Core Alignment:
5.NBT.A.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right.
5.NBT.A.2 Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
This is a set of Base Ten Exponent Cards from 10⁰ through 10¹⁰ in the 5 ways students should be able to identify them:
Exponential Form of Base 10
Exponent in Word Form
Standard Word Form
Standard Number Form
As a Multiplication Expression
Perfect for a matching game or Go Fish.
Other ideas for use include:
Spread out on a table and have students find the 5 cards that are equal. (exponent, standard number, standard number word form, multiplication expression & exponential form in words)
*10⁰ and 10¹ only have 4 cards that match. There are 2 additional explanation cards that you can use to make these have 5 in their set. See Slide #16.
Use for “Go Fish”. Students need to collect all 5 cards for each base ten amount.
Pass out a card to each student and have them find their equivalent matches as they walk around the room.
