Students work together on this Earth Science review by taking on the role of detective and accepting missions that will take them on a fun Earth science journey!
I am a teacher in Texas and created this as a review for the 5th grade Science STAAR. Mission: Secret Landform can be used as an assessment to check the students’ understanding of landforms, agents, and WED processes. This activity can be done all in one class period lasting 90 minutes, or spread out over a three day period with 30 minute lessons. I used the Lotus Map as the heart of this review. It is a fantastic graphic organizer that creates a beautiful visual of the information learned.
Your class will work in teams to develop a set of clues for a given landform. After the teams create their clues and accomplish their first mission, the remaining 60 minutes of class will be used as the time for all teams to solve the mystery of the other 7 landforms. After teams have accomplished all 3 missions, the 9 square clue sheets and diagrams made by the teams will be used to create a wall size Lotus Map.
I love this review and my former students still remember the day I turned them into secret agents. I have included keys and detailed instructions for this review, including extra Lotus Map templates. You and your students will have a fun day in Science, and you will watch the “light bulbs” go off over their heads. What could be better?!
**Feel free to leave feedback or rate the review. I LOVE hearing how teachers use the lessons I make! If there's anything you need, let me know. I'd like to help. :)
