"To gain knowledge, we must learn to ask the right questions." (Anatol Rapoport)
Classroom discussions and communication in mathematics is an important component in all math instruction. There are “teachable moments” when this occurs naturally. However sometimes it can be a challenge getting kids to talk about their thinking. My product has 34 different questions for teachers to use that encourage good classroom discussions about math. You can print, hole punch, and hang these on a ring for ease of use. There are also 8 blank cards so you can add questions of your own. These can be used during whole group and small group lessons. I also included a page with all the questions that you could keep with your lesson plans or in the TE of your primary math resource.
Incorporating open-ended questions into your math instruction, daily, provides students opportunities to master the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.
MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4: Model with mathematics.
MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6: Attend to precision.
MP7: Look for and make use of structure.
MP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
