Oh no!! The floor is lava! SERIOUSLY! In this cool "let's play pretend" activity, the floor has turned into lava! Students have to find the ten obstacles around the room (without touching the floor) and complete all twenty problems in order to win! While playing this fun game, students will practice math test prep that aligns with fifth grade common core math standards. This activity is a great way to make more meaningful connections to math in the real world. Students will embark upon a day of lava and volcanoes math activities. You can use this The Floor is Lava classroom transformation as 5th grade math test prep review.
When many people think of classroom transformations, they think:
“This would take me hours to set up.”
“This is going to cost so much money.”
“This looks so overwhelming.”
“I could never do this!”
What if I told you classroom transformations could be EASY to set up, FUN to implement, and STRESS-FREE?
A room transformation changes your room into a certain setting or theme to engage students in their own learning with rigorous content.
Classroom transformations are possible in EVERY classroom. You don’t have to spend hours of your time setting up a classroom transformation or spend lots of money to make it SO MUCH FUN!

Help your students tackle the lava in your classroom! What kid hasn't "played pretend" that the floor is lava! Now, it's possible to make it happen right inside your classroom! Students complete 10 math test prep challenges that are real-world math problems. Your 5th graders will answer questions about measurement, fractions, operations and algebraic thinking, multiplication, division, geometry, and numbers in base ten.
Print out all 10 volcano posters and all 10 aligned challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they will have to go around and solve all of the challenges without touching the floor (AKA lava)! They have to find all ten challenges you've left around the classroom and find the answers to each one. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.
There is also an additional writing activity where students scan the QR codes on each poster and find out fun facts about volcanoes! This math activity is perfect for fifth graders. It aligns with all 5th grade math standards.
Step 1: Tell your class that they have to pretend the floor is lava today and will practice 5th grade math test prep. Students solve math challenges set up around the room—but with a twist—NO TOUCHING THE FLOOR! They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.
Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!
Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or groups. Your choice!
Step 3: If students don’t show their work or touch the lava, I have them complete a “You Got Burned” paper (orange below). This encourages them to show their work AND gives them some extra multiplication fact practice!
Step 4: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included. I also reward my students with lava (AKA slime) at the end.
Step 5: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about volcanoes that they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper. This keeps everyone happy and on task!
