Product Description
In this unit, students will use literacy skills to become experts on ecology and exploring the concept of interdependence. They will continue to develop their skills as experts – people who use reading, writing, listening, and speaking to build and share deep knowledge about a topic. They will apply these skills during their nonfiction writing unit as well. They will begin the unit reading a narrative nonfiction biography, Rachel Carson: Pioneer of Ecology, and applying what they’ve learned in fiction to better understand Rachel as a character. They will then further their study of interdependence with the expository nonfiction book, Rain Forest Food Chains. The unit will wrap up with a section from Not Your Typical Book About the Environment, which explores humans’ impact on the world around them, and gives actionable tips for improving the harm we do to the environment. Students will build on their summary writing from earlier grades by participating in periodic whole class discussions about the concept of interdependence, in which students will use evidence from the texts and their own lives to further their classmates’ thinking.

The three books that will be used are:
Rachel Carson, Pioneer of Ecology, Kathleen V. Kudlinski
Rain Forest Food Chains, Heidi Moore
Not Your Typical Book About the Environment, Elin Kelsey

The goals of this unit are to:
• Show students that different structures of nonfiction can cover similar topics
• Build literacy skills to become experts about a topic
• Synthesize information gathered over several texts
• Build conversation skills through whole class evidence-based discussions
