This bundle contains writing prompts and quizzes for four novels that fifth graders love! The no-prep resources in this bundle will help you enjoy reading these books with your class instead of worrying about preparing activities.

This bundle includes the following resources:

    Quizzes For Each Book

    → Quickly assess student comprehension

→ Cover many CCSS-ELA standards and elements of fiction including: vocabulary, cause and effect, main idea, summarizing, character analysis, sequence of events, story details, comparing and contrasting, problem/resolution, and much more

→ One quiz for every 1 or 2 chapters

    → Every quiz contains: 1 short-response, 3 multiple-choice higher-order-thinking questions

→ Questions and answers written in standardized test prep form

→ Match the rigor required of CCSS

→ Answer key provided for all quiz questions.

    Writing Prompts For Each Book

    → Assess student comprehension

→ Requires students to use important skills: summarizing, characterization, cause and effect, figurative language, author's purpose, vocabulary strategies, and personal reflection

→ Match the rigor required by the CCSS

→ Answer key is provided for prompts for Pie, but not for the other books.

→ One writing prompt for every chapter

→ Prompts clearly state the chapter after which they should be given to students

→ Simply print and go! Space for response is provided.

→ Limited print budget? Project onto a whiteboard and have students answer in a journal.

    Vocabulary Activities (Hoot Only)

Use this interactive vocabulary activity to help your students understand, and be able to use, key vocabulary from Hoot. Students will cut out vocabulary words and glue them in their notebook for every two chapters. Then they will attach the correct definition and sentence with each word. This is a very helpful, interactive way for students to practice the vocabulary, too. Directions and answer key are included.

    Cloze Activities (Hoot Only)

This file contains a cloze reading activity for every two chapters of Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Each page contains a summary of the chapters, with missing words for students to fill in. Students select the missing words from a word bank at the bottom of each page. An answer key is included. To make it more challenging, you can cut off the word bank before you make copies.

    Discussion Task Cards (Hoot Only)

→ Designed to spark student discussion and/or writing

→ Two task cards for each chapter

→ Help students make a personal connection with the story's characters.
