This activity is an extension of order of operations and is Common Core aligned. Students are asked to work backwards on this activity. They are given a number, and must use a minimum of 3 operations from PEMDAS to create an equation that equals that number. It's challenging and really demonstrates students' understanding of the operations and how they work with each other. It requires higher-order thinking and can really be a challenge.
You can give further directions for your activity and make it your own. Focusing on brackets? Tell students brackets must be one of the three operations. Working with 4th graders? Focus on multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting. This activity is flexible for all grade levels!
