Product Description

Your 5th grade students will practice and master decimal and whole number place value by using these math activities and hands on centers. These place value math activities would make excellent small group or math station activities after initial place value instruction.

These activities are VERY similar to those found in my place value rodeo math centers. If you think your students would enjoy the theming and clip art, check that resource out below! If you think your students would prefer a more streamlined, less themed activity- this is the one for you!

⭐ Activity #1 titled “Place Value Match” asks students to match standard form, word form and expanded forms of a given number. 4 versions of the activity are included each with varying difficulty. Decimal numbers in this activity are expanded as decimal numbers rather than fractions. A recording sheet is included so that students can be held accountable for their work.

⭐ Activity #2 titled “Roll, Write, Expand” requires the use of 6 die. Students would roll the die to create a six digit number that goes from the hundreds place to the thousandths place. 4 work mats have been included. These can be laminated so students can work directly on the mat. A recording sheet is also included and could be used as a print and go.

⭐ Activity #3 is titled “I Have/Who Has Place Value Edition”. This challenging activity asks students to manipulate place value and recognize numbers described in terms of place value. For example, 120 is the same as 12 tens. This activity can be used in a group setting or one student or team of students can line the cards up from end to end in a long *self correcting* chain.

⭐ Activity #4 is titled “Place Value Shove”. This activity reinforces the movement of numbers on the place value system when multiplying or dividing by 10. Students work with one task card at a time laying digits out on the place value mat. As students multiply or divide they “shove” the digits to the left or right. A recording sheet has been included in this activity.

⭐ Activity #5 is titled “Excellent Exponents”. This is a quick activity in which students would lay out the number of tens being multiplied together when raising ten to a given power. Students then count the zeros in the 10s they laid out and record the product with the same number of zeros on the recording sheet.

⭐ Activity #6 is titled “Exponent Multiplication”. This activity is appropriate after students have become proficient with the “Excellent Exponents” activity. To set the game up the teacher would cut the cactus into 3 pieces. The students’ job is to find the three matching pieces that create a cactus. A recording sheet is included for student accountability.
