Math Journals are a great way to allow students to organize their thoughts, clarify their thinking, and reflect on their mathematical ideas. In this product, you will find ten math journal prompts addressing place value skills. After copying these pages double sided, your students will have a booklet to use to explain the value of numbers, expanded form, word form, comparing decimals, rounding, and estimating. Each prompt includes a checklist for your students to assess their response. Each prompt is also included individually on a page for printing multiple copies for a center activity.

These prompts are not focused on word problems or problem-solving skills, but rather the ability to explain their mathematical thinking and processes.

Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.
Compare two decimals to thousandths based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Read and write decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form, e.g., 347.392 = 3 × 100 + 4 × 10 + 7 × 1 + 3 × (1/10) + 9 × (1/100) + 2 × (1/1000).
Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
