Looking for an effective and easy to implement way to have your students apply grade level reading skills to any text they are reading (including independent reading books)? This set of reading choice boards will not only engage your students in choice, but will also allow them to practice the 5th grade common core literature standards.

NOTE: This resource now has a Google Classroom version, making it ideal for digital distance learning and remote teaching! Please see the 3rd page of the PDF for details and the link!

Please view the video preview to make sure this resource will work for your needs!

This literature reading choice board resource contains 12 reading choice boards:

  • 9 reading standards-based choice boards (one for each 5th Grade Literature Standard)
  • 3 choice boards written by domain with the standards grouped --> This is ideal for a nice review after all of the standards in that domain have been introduced and taught. **These three choice boards are not currently included in the Google Slides version.

Some of the choice boards have stories to go with them for easy implementation. The choice boards without stories are ones that work well with students using their own independent reading books.

Make sure that you print the accompanying stories to have them available for students who choose those tasks.

About the Reading Choice Boards:

Each standards-based choice board contains 8 tasks for the students to complete with their independent reading books.

Some of the choices require specific types of literature (poems or plays)for the students to read. This will help broaden a student’s variety of reading and expose them to the necessary literature as required by Common Core State Standards.

Example Tasks:

  • Write at least two inferences you can make about the main character based on his/her actions, dialogue, and/or thoughts.
  • Read the paired theme stories. Write a possible theme each story might have.
  • Create a story elements graphic organizer, and fill it in with the characters, setting, and plot of the book or story you are reading.
  • Read Story #7. Study the underlined words. Use context clues to determine the meanings of the words.
  • Choose a play to read. After reading the play, describe the first scene of the play. What purpose does this scene have?
  • Choose a visual from the “Visuals to Analyze” page. Describe the mood of the visual. Mood is the atmosphere created by the details.

An answer key is not included at this time!

The choice boards could be used for homework, independent work, or reading centers. These would be perfect for a reader’s response center, a write about reading center, or just Reader’s Workshop.

Other Important Notes:

  • Available in two formats: with and without a colored background.
  • Answer key not included at this time, but will eventually be added.
