This particular assessment focuses on reading and comprehending figurative language. Questions assess understanding of author's use of figurative language to help us visualize, use context clues, and interpret common phrases of figurative language.
In Virginia, our 5th graders do not have to identify the TYPE of figurative language used - they simply have to interpret/comprehend it as it is used in the context of a story. This assessment focuses on assessing their ability to comprehend the figurative language - it does not ask them to identify hyperbole, metaphor, idiom, etc. This assessment contains 15 questions.
I have a series of skill worksheets and matching assessments that I have created for my reading instruction. In general, I focus on one reading skill each week (this one being Interpreting Figurative Language). They will be taking this graded Skill Assessment on Day 5 of that skill week.
