This resource is a student-centered sorting activity using the STAAR stems that they are likely to see in a testing format.
The students first determine which cards are the headers (they have the TEKS and a short description written) and which are the stems. Once they have all the header cards laid out, they will move on to sorting through the stems, looking for patterns and possible clue words and phrases that will help them determine the type of question on each card.
For your convenience, the answer key is found in the pages before cutting out the cards. All stems written under a header are meant to go with that TEKS. You can keep a copy uncut as your answer key to help you check students’ work.
If this seems a bit overwhelming for your students, you can always give them just a few TEKS at a time so they can master those particular standards. The students will be able to pick up on patterns found within the questions and as you teach the standards, you can also teach how to tackle individual types of questions.
Understanding the questions they will be asked to answer is one of the first steps in helping your students achieve mastery. This sorting activity can be used in whole group, partners, or even in a station. Hope you enjoy!
