Fifth Grade Science The Source of All Food Energy is the Sun NGSS 5-PS3-1 Aligned
This project uses engaging PowerPoints and interesting videos to give your students a solid understanding of how the sun is the source of all energy in food. Through various explorations and interactive activities, they’ll become familiar with food chains and how they work. This lesson includes several videos, as well as engaging and interactive PowerPoint presentations.
This lesson is in 5E format, and is aligned with NGSS Standard 5-PS3-1.
This unit is for 5th grade NGSS Performance Expectation 5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food was once energy from the sun.

The 5E steps are:
Students watch an editable PowerPoint presentation where they must answer questions on the slides, and then watch a linked video.
Two Explore activities are provided where the students explore where the energy in food comes from, and how it travels from one organism to another.
Here the students watch an interactive PowerPoint discussing food chains and the different roles organisms play in them. A link to a video is included at the end of the slide presentation.
Two elaboration activities are provided.
The students are given a challenge and must prepare an argumentative essay based on what they learned. Directions for the essay are included in the Teacher Notes and on the student handout.
Detailed Teacher notes have been provided to cover all aspects of this unit and the essay instructions. Answer keys are provided where appropriate.
