This file contains a vocabulary review/enrichment activity where students analyze four science words or phrases related to the Structures and Functions of Living Organisms (Body Systems) 5th Grade Science Essential Standards . Students choose one word from a list of four to get rid of and provide an explanation to justify their decision.
This activity can be used as a great test prep review such a state end of the year standardized assessment or to help review a unit on body systems before a classroom test. Students need to have some knowledge of body systems for the activity to be most beneficial. This activity requires students to analyze each word, look for characteristics to group similar words together and then provide an explanation to defend their thinking.
Other uses of this activity might include: partner work to review standards, enrichment activity for early finishers, extra credit assignment, homework, Science centers, review for state assessment, etc.
There are 25 sets of words for students to try broken down into four assignments:
1st worksheet--Unicellular and Multi-cellular Organisms
2nd worksheet--Skin, Skeletal & Muscular Systems
3rd worksheet--Nervous & Circulatory System
4th worksheet--Respiratory & Digestive System
Each assignment also has a list of potential answers as well as a sentence using the words to justify the answer (answer key). I used the sentence to model how I want the students to answer when we first began using these. I have also included "I can" statements that align with the body systems Science Essential Standards.
