This is my spelling unit for my 5th grade class. It is a mixture of Sitton Spelling's core words, which are words that are frequently used in writing, and the pattern words that follow Pearson's Reading Street weekly stories.
How to use this:
First, the preview file is a reference resource that you can keep in your spelling files to quickly refer back to any words or lists. On this list, you will find 5 weekly core words that Sitton suggests for 5th graders, 20 pattern words from Reading Street, and 5 challenging pattern words also from Reading Street. I only use the first 10 pattern words, thus the gray highlighting refers to the words I do not test the students over, but could possibly use for extended pattern study and/or remediation.
Second, you will find all my weekly pretest/post-test units from 1-30. I have found that the best thing is to cut off the first column (the complete list) prior to Monday. On Monday, I pretest the students and they fill in the middle column. After the test, I grade each student's pretest and highlight the first ten missed words. In some cases, it may be less than ten. I then highlight and add the challenge words. Using the list I already cut off, I highlight the words they need to study from the first column and highlight the numbers of the words that they will be doing on the post-test come Friday. (Yes, some students may have gotten all the pretest correct and thus only have the 5 challenge words. Therefore, your students could have any amount of words; no less than 5 but no more than 10.)
Next, I have a helper cut apart the pretest and post-test columns. I keep the post-test until Friday and the students take home the other two columns home.
