With all of the changes that have come about with Common Core implementation I knew that it was time to change up my 5th grade spelling program. We still needed spelling practice, but we also needed to incorporate Greek and Latin roots, academic vocabulary, and be exposed to various types of sentences. Do students still need to be looking up words and noting parts of speech and definitions? Absolutely! It just looks a little different than when we were in school. So with all of this in mind, and with the fact that my students LOVE to have a notebook that THEY create, last year I started using #verbalwizardry A Spelling and More Student Notebook. My students came up with the name. We wanted something catchy.
Here is what it is all about:
• 24 weeks of word lists (students cut and glue into notebooks)
• Each list also contains 5 dictation sentences (I saw great improvement in sentence structure once we started doing this.)
• Each list incorporates a spelling skill, prefix/suffix, Greek or Latin root, and academic vocabulary
• Students sort the words in their notebooks based on the skill involved
• Student Cover page
• Weekly Requirements (Homework) page
• Spelling Pretest page
• A Weekly Strategies page for the teacher
• Weekly Test Page
• Personal Dictionary pages (for the back of the notebook)
• Easy to differentiate for EL’s and students on IEPs
• Students end up with a collection of word work that they created. It became a valuable resource in my classroom.
