The study of stems, or Greek/Latin roots, is an important part of our vocabulary studies. It helps students to break down words that they’ve never seen and figure out the meanings.
This is a plan for the study of the stems required in the 5th grade, including the stems from the ELA Standards and the Clover School District GT Plan. When at all possible, teach the stems IN CONTEXT, with related Math, Science, and Social Studies units. I have grouped the stems in a way that makes logical sense…the ones grouped together have similar meanings or go well with each other. This should take approximately one semester (15+ weeks), but it is flexible depending on the other required vocabulary studies and the needs of your students!
This zip file includes all the resources and quizzes you will need to teach THIRTY-FIVE stems. There are stems study guides for students to fill out, as well as teacher's keys, a quiz for each set of stems, and a lesson plan about how to teach this study. They are all word documents that can be customizable. The only thing I have not included is a pre/post test for the 35 stems. I haven't come up with that yet, but will add it when I do! :-)
