I was frustrated with the spelling tests included in my Spelling workbooks because it was in a completely different format than my state’s standardized test (Louisiana's iLEAP) spelling section. There is a good chance that my students knew the words, but were confused by the format. So, I created these tests to suit my needs. Rather than giving 4 different spellings of the same word and having the student pick the correct spelling, this test format has the student select the word that is spelled INCORRECTLY and there is a chance that there are no mistakes. This final answer choice “No Mistakes” seems to trip up my students on standardized testing, so I wanted them to have lots of practice.
Tests each have 20 questions for ease of grading. In the past, because spelling grades count for a minimal percentage of my students' ELA grades, I lump each unit's tests together to make one grade. For example, all unit one tests would be stapled together after completion. The grade would be based out of 100 (5 tests x 20 questions each).
In Unit 1, I only used the current week's spelling words on each test. So, if tub was a spelling word in 1.1, it only showed up on 1.1 test. It does not reappear on 1.3 test. In Units 2-6, to increase complexity, previous words reappear in correct and incorrect form to challenge students. Test 6.5 has all words spelled correctly, so students will select "no mistakes" for each one- just for fun.
I included an answer key for each test because for some reason, I have a hard time grading spelling tests without my spell checker handy ;)
Please note that I am not involved in any way with the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Treasures® Reading Series. These tests are only meant to complement and enhance your instruction with that series.
