This is a cool review activity to see what the kids know - in this People Search, the kids have to find 6 different classmates to correctly answer the 6 questions. Students cannot write on their own sheets (I sometimes have my kids each use different colors of pens/pencils for answering the questions on a friend's sheet.) This particular people search reviews important people who had an impact on the Civil Rights Movement in Virginia: Arthur Ashe, Oliver Hill, Linwood Holton Jr, Douglas Wilder, Maggie Walker, and Harry F. Byrd, Sr. For Virginia Standards of Learning, this covers VS.9c, a fifth grade standard. To make this even more challenging, I'll play a song on my iPod, and the kids have to hurry and obtain their 6 answers before the song is up. At the end of the song, no matter what, they return to their seats and buddy check for (1) completion and (2) correctness. You can give tickets or candy for anyone who successfully completes the People Search. To add even MORE challenge, you can assign your students each a primary color and have them search for 2 answers from each primary color. There are so many ways to make this fun and exciting - my students LOVE doing this as a review. Tip: The louder the music, the better! :) Key is included on the second page. I have two identical searches on a single page to cut copy numbers in half.
