These vocabulary organizers are for all 5 weeks of the Wonders Reading Series Unit 3
I love the vocabulary pages in the Reading/Writing Workshop book of the McGraw-Hill Wonders Reading Series. However, I wanted something to make my students accountable and to actually show me they are discussing the meaning of unknown words with their partners. I also wanted to differentiate the learning of the vocabulary. These tools also help me to have a discussion about my students' thinking when we discuss the actually meaning of the words. After talking about the meanings of the words with a partner, students record their ideas of the meaning of the word under the "I think it means..." column. The students can confirm that they were correct in the "It really means..." column or they can see the error of their thinking and make their corrections during a whole class or small group discussion with the teacher.
I have used this type of organizer in the past many different ways. First, I usually do this activity whole group or in small groups to show my students what I expect and to model how to "think" through the discovery of the meaning of an unknown word. After that, I have students work with a partner to discuss the meaning of the words as I monitor the room and watch for engaging discussions and help where I am needed. I have also used these as individual assessments as it gets closer to the dreaded end of the year tests.
Please look at the preview to see the organizers. They have a space for the word, the word used in context, I think it means... column, and an It really means...column.
