The “Six Plus One Writing Traits” charts are appropriate for writing instruction in grades 3rd-8th. (With scaffolding, the traits can be introduced in 1st and 2nd grade, when modeling, doing group writing, group editing, and individual writing conferences.)
Utilize the “Six Plus One Writing Traits” of ideas and content, organization, word choice, voice, fluency, and conventions, plus presentation in your writing process lessons, to teach designated grade level Common Core Language and Writing Standards and in instructing how to write a variety of genres in all subjects.
The student friendly “Six Plus One Writing Traits” charts with strategies can be integrated into your daily writing instruction, included in student writing practice, and used to teach Common Core English Language Arts Standards: Language and Writing identified from the Common Core Standards’ links referenced on page 12. “Sharpen your writing skills!” and “Use the 6 + 1 Traits!” bulletin board headings are also attached, as explained on page 11.
Writing traits and strategies are to be modeled, used in group and student writing, and emphasized during the writing process of prewriting, composing, and revising and editing. (The “Writing Process” with strategies, another writing material available on Lynne's Literacy Learnings, contains charts that are excellent companions for the “Six Plus One Writing Traits” strategy charts.) With implementation of the “Six Plus One Traits” strategies, watch your students’ writing, understanding of the writing traits, and their motivation to write improve!
