This is a unit designed to introduce the act of annotating and close reading. It includes an introduction ppt, notes, literary practice, and non-fiction articles and guided questions.
I originally created this for my high school sophomores, but it has been modified to fit into a middle school Language arts classroom. I have found a lot of success with it. It can be broken apart into individual components, or you could work through beginning to end and create a final summative assessment using the non-fiction articles as the basis for a paper/essay.
