6-Lesson Vertical Elementary Art Color Unit
One lesson for each grade level K-5.
This package includes...
o Kindergarten: Kandinsky Color Circles
Kindergarteners will learn about the primary and secondary colors and how they are created. After examining a variety of famous paintings, kinders will complete a hands-on color-mixing painting lesson inspired by the work of Wassily Kandinsky.

o 1st grade: Delaunay-Inspired Tissue Paper Collage
1st graders will be review what they already know about the primary and secondary colors by completing a hands-on color mixing activity and worksheet. Then students will examine the work of French abstract artist Robert Delaunay. Inspired by his use of abstract figures and color, students will create a colorful tissue paper collage using only primary colored tissue paper (tissue must be correctly layered to create the secondary colors).

o 2nd grade: Winter Value Landscapes
2nd graders will learn all about value (the lightness or darkness of a color) and creating the illusion of form (by using highlights and shadows) to help create an amazing winter landscape scene.

o 3rd grade: Expressive Word Art
3rd graders will learn about the symbolic/meaningful qualities of both line and color and use their knowledge to create an expressive word art piece.

o 4th grade: Colleen Wilcox-inspired Chalk Pastel
4th graders will learn about contemporary female Hawaiian artist Colleen Wilcox and examine her use of line and color in her artwork. Students will create their own chalk-pastel art pieces, which reflect Wilcox’s colorful movement-filled style. Analogous color schemes will be examined.

o 5th grade: Warhol-inspired Pop Art Painting
5th graders will learn about the Pop Art movement and three of its artists (Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol). Inspired by Warhol’s use of everyday items and repetition, students will create a repetitive print-like painting which uses four different color schemes.
