PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Kids absolutely LOVE doing these brief assessments! At the beginning of each guided reading group, I start by saying, “Who’s ready for the 60 Second Challenge?” There are always giggles and excitement! I remind them to think of all the words they know how to spell and that their name is a word! I time them for 1 minute. When time is up, I say “Okay! Circle all the words you spelled and then you will read them to me!” I quickly go around to each child and have the child read the words they circled. If they wrote a word that is incorrect, I’ll say, “You know that was an excellent try! This is the way you spell that word. You’ll get to try again tomorrow!” Then they color in the number of words they spelled correctly on their personal bar graph. I usually glue the graphs onto the inside front cover and just add a new one each time they complete a graph.

I also tell them that they will want to beat their score tomorrow so that if they only got 3 words today, they will try for 4 tomorrow. Before we start each spree, we will talk about what their goal is for the day.

This assessment can show how fast a child is building control over a basic writing vocabulary. This assessment is not useful for students who can write 50 or more words independently (Clay).

This should not be a spelling test, but if the student is not writing, prompt the student by asking:

“Do you know how to write is or to?

“Do you know how to write Mom or Dad?”

Always give words in sets of two or three. Some words you might try are: I, a, in, am, come, see, like, the, my, we, have, on, up, look, go, this, it, me.

Additional prompts:

your last name

family names

pets’ names

color words

word families

rhyming words

number words

opposites

action words

animals

asking words (who, what, when, where, why, how)

I have included “2 Minute Challenge” if you prefer to start with more time. I have also included graphs from 1-11 and 1-20, framed and unframed and in two sizes. It’s your call as to which one you use.

Your kids will become faster and faster with these sprees which will transfer into writer’s workshop or everyday writing!!!

Directions are included!
