I made these rubrics after reading Ruth Culham’s The Writing Thief. If you haven’t read this book, stop what you are doing and go buy it! I is a fun and easy read compared to her previous textbook like 6+1 Writing Traits book. After reading the book I searched and searched for rubrics that I could use to assess my students after teaching each trait. But, I couldn’t find any I liked so I made some.
This is how I used these rubrics:
We would focus on one trait per short writing piece. It was hard, but I really tried to only focus on the trait I had taught them. Once I had taught my students all of the traits I slimmed down the rubrics into one. You will see those on my TPT page under rubrics.
When I would grade their papers I would simply underline the element expressed in the 5 column that they were missing. Then I would count up how many underlines they had for each section and give them a score 1-5. I like grading papers this way because it helps students(and parents) see exactly what they need to improve on in their writing.
