Are you frustrated with navigating the entire CCSS document just to find the grammar that you are supposed to teach at your grade level? Have you ever lost your place when trying to find out what is expected for an argumentative piece at your grade level? We have heard these comments many times so decided to create easy-to-use checklists to meet your CCSS needs.
We have examined the CCSS standards carefully and identified those standards that specifically address the teaching of writing. This set of documents addresses the writing requirements for grades 6-8 which are addressed specifically in both the Writing (W) Standards and in the Language (L) Standards.
We have presented the standards in grade level ranges, instead of separate grade-level-only documents as we know that you have students that are achieving above and below grade-level. We also understand the importance of knowing what your students have done, as well as where they are going. Therefore, standards that are new to a grade level are printed in red. Teachers LOVE this unique feature of our easy-to-use charts.
In this booklet you will see several overview documents which will give you the big picture of how the writing and language standards break down by ‘anchors’ (pp. 3-4). These are useful visual displays of the Writing and Language Anchor Standards, especially when trying to see how the standards work together. We also provide you with important information about genres and subgenres.
Following these pages are two types of forms:
* Pages 5 - 12 show you the standards for your grade level span. These are presented in a simple chart/checklist form so that you can check them off as you teach the standards and your students achieve mastery. These checklists allow you to see what must be covered at your specific grade level, while still looking forward and back.
* Pages 13-29 provide you with easy-to-use student mastery checklists for Writing Anchors 1-3 and Language Anchors 1 and 2 (Conventions). You can simply enter student names and then use a checkmark or date in the appropriate row as students master each requirement. Alternately, you may want to use these forms to enter brief progress notes.
We are teachers and consultants who use the CCSS standards every day and KNOW what teachers need!
