After reading the series China the Culture, China the People, and China the Land by Bobbie Kalman as part of our geography class, students were asked to apply CCSS writing, speaking/listening, and reading standards to an extension activity using 21st Century Skills. Students participate in whole group readings and formative assessments with a Question Formula Technique (QFT) at the end to kick off their research (in small groups) for an individual Google Slide presentation based on their research formed from QFT activity. Students are very actively engaged in process and take ownership of the project as they are able to select their topic, however it is an informed choice based off of inquiry and what they already know from the readings. Their text can be a resource for their research as well as the Internet. Students see geography and reading as a cross curricular entity as they take accountability of the standards in more than one subject.
Overall the unit on China takes approximately 4 weeks with the readings. The Google Slide Presentation takes about two weeks at 45 minute class periods from the QFT to research, slide instruction, preparation, and presentation.
