The colon: the barrier between ninjas and giants, girls and boys, telescopes and…ew…bacteria. The colon is not simply a common punctuator that introduces a list. It has POWER. Power to express the value of a relationship, power to inspire a divisor to act, power of equality with the fraction bar, power to become… A WORD.
These lesson segments—a thorough indulgence in standard 6.RP.A.1—engage students in exploring, practicing, and developing the language of ratios using reading, writing, creative problem-solving, peer communication, data display interpretation, diagram-designing, and analysis skills.
Prepare for unit rates. Prepare for tests. And you might want to prepare for more ninjas. The ninjas, after all, are probably preparing as you read this.
