Unit: Early Civilizations (Mesopotamia)
Materials: Hammurabi's Code (PowerPoint Presentation); Hammurabi's Code (Word document - accompanying)
Description: This activity follows the "I do, we do, you do" model.
A presentation contains a "Do Now" prompt related to harsh punishments (in this case, Singapore). Students then complete a brief 'Guided Notes' template in Cornell Notes formatting (on their worksheet). This introduces students to the 'Who, What, When, Why, ands Where' of Hammurabi's Code. Next, students use the accompanying worksheet to work in pairs or table groups annotating a selection of Hammurabi's Code (a primary source). Students are also tasked with summarizing each law as well as providing an opinion of their take on it (summary, analysis, reading comprehension skills). This is followed by an EXIT PASS relating to the objective and finally, critical thinking questions for individual completion.
