I was used to putting the standards and "I Can" statements on the board, but I was seeing that it wasn't making an impact to my students. I designed this checklist for my students to use to keep track of their own mastery so they could feel a connection to their learning goals.
The chart is six pages long (3 sheets of paper with front/back copies). I have separated each portion of the Common Core so it has its own page (Literature, Informational Text, Speaking/Listening, Language) except Writing has two pages. Each page has four columns.
Column 1: the actual standard directly from the Common Core
Column 2: "I Can" statements. I broke down the standard into manageable pieces for the students to master.
Column 3: A large blank area where students write the assignment that shows their mastery of the standard and/or "I Can."
Column 4: A small area labeled Teacher Initial for you to check off your students' progress.
Since the standards are so compact, I designed this chart so you can easily focus on all of the pieces of the standard, or just a small part.
