In this 6th grade thematic literature Smartboard unit, the Big Idea is "Success". All text selections (both fiction and nonfiction) will connect back to the theme and the Essential Questions. The unit will end with a culminating writing performance demonstration. The writing type is informative/explanatory. The student will create an informational flyer or one-pager that explains how a person can be successful. One required element of the writing will be a timeline with main ideas and supporting details highlighting success from the life of Harry Houdini (Close Read selection). Additional evidence will come from other Unit 5 selections. The flyer/one-pager should be creative and informative.
Links are provided throughout the unit which include lessons on main idea/supporting details, explicit vocabulary, a group biography project, & online plot activities. The text selections (which all relate to the big idea - Success) and related skills are as follows:
