    The Important Book

This is a great activity to help students practice scanning for the most pertinent information.

    • Directions: Have students use their texts and other sources to list 9 facts about each topic. They will then choose the fact they believe to be the MOST important to list first, & that fact is also repeated last. In between, students should list the remaining 8 facts that relate to each topic.
    • Teaching Tip: I generally introduce the structure with the topic “Shoes”. We list 9 facts about shoes. Then, we pick the most important, and rewrite our facts following this formula. After that example, they have usually have the hang of it.

    Greek Myths as Reader’s Theater

Practicing reader’s theater scripts is a fun way to build reading fluency in the upper grades while studying ancient Greece and Greek mythology! When the scripts play out famous Greek Myths this practice becomes interdisciplinary combining reading fluency, vocabulary, public speaking, and social studies. A synopsis of the Gods & Goddesses with a pronunciation guide is also included.

**As a teacher, I understand the importance of keeping all students active participants throughout the rehearsal process. Therefore, there are no one line parts. When a role is smaller, I worked to incorporate it as much as possible throughout the play.**

Reader's Theater Teaching Tips: Begin by familiarizing the class with the characters & unknown vocabulary. To build fluency speed, have students pre-read their scripts silently several times. (To build fluency with improved expression, begin to practice out loud.)

I like to divide my class into 4 groups and give each group a play to practice. After much practice, they then perform it for the class.

This is a GREAT MAY or JUNE Activity!!

Reader’s theater can be made into a costumed, staged performance or kept simple with students sitting on chairs in front of the class. Do what works best for your schedule!
