This is a 24 page FULLY EDITABLE, 7 day unit on world flag design. It is hands-down my students' favorite unit in class!! It's downloadable in Word format so that you can adjust details, add clip-art, etc. as necessary. Complete with cloze notes and plenty of activities/discussion. Perfect to use with Winter Olympics coming up and all of the flags that students will see!
I've included detailed notes at the end of the download about what I do on specific days of this unit along with some "pro tips" for presenting this well.
Short summary of what's included:
Day 1 - Cloze notes on what colors of flags represent; students color in flags of Mexico, Germany and France along with reading about what those specific colors mean for those countries (easily editable if you want to pick diff. countries)
Day 2: Students complete ancestry flag research in the library or lab (can easily be done for HW if you don't have computer access). Students briefly research a country, discover fun facts, and tell you what the colors and symbols of the flag mean.
Day 3: Students share about their ancestry flags in small groups, and keep track of what they learn from each other on an easy-to-track chart (included)
Day 4: Students begin planning the process of designing their own personal flag (a flag that represents them) based on the color/symbol process that we've been learning about for past three days. Students use discussion-starters in small group to share their flag ideas and get peer feedback prior to the design process.
Days 5-6: Complete personal flag design in class and complete spotlight paragraph on three of the symbols used in the personal flag (why did you pick that color, etc.).
Day 7: Students share their personal flags in small, rotating groups and keep track of what they learned from each other on another easy-to-follow chart.
Yes, you are getting ALL of these materials in this packet!! I've taught this unit ten times, and after each time, I tweaked it so that it became better and better. Enjoy!
