Having students recognize the 7 principles of the constitution from primary documents is one of the most difficult tasks in U.S. History 1. This sorting activity is perfect for a culminating activity that addresses the information at the fullness of the standard. It includes excerpts from the Constitution, the first 10 Amendments and selected grievances from the Declaration of Independence. Having the three documents helps the students make connections between the colonial period and the early republic.
The activity has easy to identify symbols that will help the teacher quickly check if the answers are correct. Like all of my sorting activities, the rectangles are all the same size so that you can easily stack the papers and use a paper cutter to prep the materials. And of course use colored paper to spice things up.
Hope you and your students have fun and they are challenged to think!
