7.4A Rate of Change Partner Activity
This resource can also be used as a scaffold to struggling students that need a step up before attempting 8.4C as Pre-Algebra students.
This partner activity, provides an opportunity for students to learn cooperatively how to apply the calculation of calculating rate of change that was introduced in the 7.4A Rate of Change Scaffolded Notes.
This partner activity allows for each student to assist each as well as access the application of each required representation in TEK 7.4A. By adding sentences that make student generate the verbal description of the rate of change, each child will create at least 2 representations from each problem given (table and verbal).
ELL students excel when using this resources due to the use of color to connect representations and the format of the slope ratio. The visual cues set within the resource will assist struggling learners to make connections, and grow their own depth of understanding by connecting the multiple representations of rate of change.
Ideas for Use:
Have partners work through finding the rate of change from each representation. Partner A should write everything Partner B tells them to write down. Once complete, students should reverse roles. Partner B will then write and Partner A will describe what to write.
Have each partner complete their assigned problem. When they are done the partners switch papers and their partner evaluates the work shown and gives pointers on how to correct any errors. The partners then complete the next representation and repeat the error analysis of each other’s work.
Provide the color-coded notes to struggling learners so that they may give tips and also teach their partners how to complete the problem.
To increase depth of knowledge, have students create a table of values, write the ratios, and then have them graph the points from the table. Then use the ratio to illustrate the changes in y-values should match and can be visually recognized. Repeat the process for the change in x-values.
