PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

It is a truth universally acknowledged that reading helps improve writing. These 75 fill in the blank writing prompts help your students turn sentences from classic novels into their own. Notes and questions help students analyze what the author wrote. These exercises will give your students a chance to learn fiction writing techniques, get creative, and glimpse into some great stories by great authors.

How it works:
Each slide contains a sentence or passage from a classic novel/short story with words/phrases that are blanked out. Students fill in the blanks however they want! The next click brings up the original passage, from a public domain book, so students can see what the author wrote.

Analyzing with Things to Note:
Each slide also contains a "Things to Note" section that points out a writing technique that the author used. These cover everything from dialogue to characterization to building suspense.

Key Terms Slides:
There are also five slides that cover certain writing terms/techniques more in depth. These include:
-Parallel Structure
-Point of View
-Showing vs. Telling
-Personification
-Word Choice (Connotation)

The Books/Short Stories:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle (14 slides)
Les Miserables by Victor Hugo (12 slides)
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (10 slides)
Peter and Wendy (Peter Pan) by J.M. Barrie (8 slides)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne (7 slides)
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (5 slides)
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (4 slides)
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells (3 slides)
The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne (3 slides)
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery (2 slides)
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams (2 slides)
The Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum (2 slides)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald (2 slides)

In total, there are 75 writing exercises and 5 Writing Technique Slides. The rest of the slides are introductory/citations. The passages are drawn from 14 books/short stories. All of the passages are drawn from novels and short stories in the US public domain.

These writing exercises and the material in the "Things to Note" section are geared towards fiction, but the techniques can be transferred over into any type of writing.

Please remember to rate and review! Thank you! :)

Note: Just a friendly note that if you've used my other prompts (thank you!), these have a slightly different format. All of the prompts are Fill in the Blank, but the sentence structures can be a more complicated because they're taken from actual books. They're great sentences, by great writers! But they probably would be too hard for a student in grades 1-5. Check out the preview to see if the sentences will work for your class. If you are looking for prompts that work great for almost all grade levels, check out my other writing prompts! Thank you! :)
