A bit about image quality:

How Big Should My Crayon Box Be? (Deciphering colour profiles for your images) Remember that time when you were a kid and you sat down with your so-called friend at a play date, each of you with your own colouring book and box of crayons? Remember how you proudly pulled out your set of 64 crayons...well actually it was 58 after the great dog-barfing-carpet-replacement incident of 1994. You opened the box to select a nice orange for the unicorn and to your horrors, your so-called friend pulls out a monster 2,000 crayon box, putting to shame your measly 58. Their unicorn emanates pink metallic fairy dust. You look in your crayon box, but alas, no pink metallic fairy dust in there. I ask, does the number of colours really matter? Read on, my Crayola-shamed friend.

Why Should I Care About Image Compression? (Keeping your images crisp) Ignorance is bliss. Am I right? Well, maybe. If you do anything with images and computers, that bliss may be causing your images to look...well, lousy. The problem may be the compression of the file that happens every time you save it. Are you interested in knowing how to keep your images looking crisp and sharp? read on, my blissfully happy friend.

300 dpi – A False Claim (Why you should look for the number of pixels, not dpi!) Maybe I’m being too persnickety, but dots (from the abbreviation dpi) are not pixels (of the abbreviation ppi). Just like caterpillars are not butterflies. So I’m going to take you on a little geek-out trip into the dot/pixel world. read on, my geek wannabe friend.JPGs, PNGs, and GIFs, oh my! (What file format and when) I know of a woman who didn't do much cooking. In fact, she used her roasting pan as a cat litter box. The problem arose when she volunteered to make Thanksgiving dinner. If you're thinking, she couldn't..., you'd be wrong. She could, and did. She washed up the litter box and cooked the turkey. Now that I have some of you gagging in revulsion, I ask the really important question – does it matter what file format you use? If you don't want to be caught using the litter box for roasting your turkey, graphically speaking, then read on, my curiously disgusted friend.

Please note, for raster images ppi (pixels per inch) defines the resolution of the image and dpi (dots per inch) defines what your printer is capable of printing. My images are saved with LOTS of pixels, typically several thousand by several thousand so it's big enough for most purposes. Check out my FREE Image File Format Cheat Sheet for a quick reference chart to determine if an image's resolution is enough for your purposes.
