Product Description

Students solve real world percent problems involving increases and decreases in cost with this card sort activity. This resource is editable.

8 stories explain an original cost and a discount or markup. Students must calculate the final price and find two equivalent equations.

Example:

A rental car costs $100 for one day. You have a coupon for 25% off.

Final Price: $75

Equations: C – 0.25C = P and 0.75C = P

20 cards are provided for 24 spaces, so students must fill in the missing blanks with their own answers.

This card sort is designed to save time. The 20 cards print in one long column. I like to quickly cut the cards almost apart, but leaving them all connected along the edge. Then, students can tear them apart, and no scissors have to be used during class.

A great activity for partners.

Answer key is included. You will receive the PDF and the editable version in PowerPoint.

Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, a + 0.05a = 1.05a means that “increase by 5%” is the same as “multiply by 1.05.”
