PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The provided 8 Common Core rigorous activities explore dramatic and situational irony. The activities are tied to the Common Core standards RI2, RI4, and SL3. The activities focus on theme, dramatic and situational irony, and speaking and listening standards. Students will examine how the argumentative appeal is revealed and developed in the commercial. The activities include a teacher answer key to assist you in your guided feedback to students. The zipped folder also includes a blank copy of the analysis document that can be modified and printed. The video for each commercial is embedded on each Word document so that you do not have to look for the commercial. The video is in a standard AVI format so that it can be played on most computers, and teachers who cannot access YouTube at work can still show the video to their classes. Wherever applicable, a link to a YouTube version of the commercial is provided. As students view and analyze the author’s use of dramatic and situational irony and theme, they will become critical viewers and thinkers. Students will answer the following questions for each of the 8 commercials:
1. Why is the chose form of irony most effective to market the particular product?
2. What type of irony does the commercial use? (What does the reader know that the characters in the commercial do not know? What does the speaker(s) intend that they do not say? What outcome does the viewer expect that does not occur?)
3. How is use of irony in the commercials used to address the perceived interests and needs of the audience?
4. What is the difference between what is stated directly and what is intended in the commercial’s message?
5. What is the product maker's purpose for creating the advertisement?
6. What is the benefit of the product's use of irony versus directly stating its message?
