The 8 Step Language Lesson was created for students to learn about words and solving unknown words, not to memorize the meaning of specific words. That is why this is an open lesson plan for you to revolve the words around your mentor texts. To use the 8 Step Language Lessons, you will create the lesson based on the mentor texts you are using throughout the year. The file also contains an editable Power Point format so you can adjust according to your needs. In this file, you will find directions for each step, an example of a lesson and resources to guide your organization and planning.
The 8 Step Language Lesson generally takes about 20 minutes. The first few times you do this lesson with students, it may take longer, but as you revisit the steps with each new word, students will understand the structure and it won’t take as long. I try to do at least 2-3 separate lessons per week, but you can do this as you see fit for your classroom instruction. Planning for each lesson generally takes me about 5 minutes (once you get into the swing of planning them).
