Product Description
This HUGE short story unit, organized around the theme of identity, includes a comprehensive 7-page content and pacing guide for 26 lessons (some multi-day), all student resources neatly organized as 60 editable Word documents (a couple PDFs for highly formatted templates), and a teacher PowerPoint of over 200 slides to guide instruction.

Short stories are a fantastic way to teach elements of fiction, and this unit is highly adaptable for many levels or for different degrees of student independence. Materials are scaffolded and spiraled for different reading levels, which has made this a great unit for the ELLs in my classes! The unit ends with a multifaceted group project in which students read an assigned story and “teach” it to the class through diverse products they create (lots of choices for different learning preferences).

Short stories studied:
• Junot Diaz’s “Fiesta, 1980”
• Langston Hughes’s “Thank You, M’am”
• Amy Tan’s “Rules of the Game”
• Dave Eggers’s “After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned”
• Liam O’Flaherty’s “The Sniper”
• Francesca Lia Block’s “Glass”
• Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use”
• Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”
• Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron”
• Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace”
• Saki’s “The Interlopers”
• Isaac Bashevis Singer’s “The Washwoman”
• Ray Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day”
• Jane Yolen’s “The Babysitter”
Supporting texts include:
• Sandra Cisneros’s “My Name” (vignette from The House on Mango Street)
• Marge Piercy’s “If I had been called Sabrina or Ann, she said” (poem)
• Julia Alvarez’s “Snow” (skills focus: imagery and characterization)
• Assorted short informational texts for background building

Lesson activities include:
• Charting Characterization
• Examining Dialect and Word Choice
• Identifying Conflicts and Their Types
• Tracking Imagery
• Analyzing Pace and Rhythm
• Understanding how Setting Creates Mood
• Interpreting Symbols
• Exploring Complex Themes
• Making Connections Between Texts Based on Essential Questions
• Group Writing Activities
• Independent Short Writing Tasks (can be easily expanded)
• Peer Revision
• Vocabulary Instruction (Quiz & Answer Key Included)
• Multi-Faceted Short Story Group Performance Task with Choice of Products

I hope you enjoy teaching this unit as much as I have! I have put a lot of work into refining and adding to it over a number of years. It can be shortened, sampled, or even used as a semesterized course in the study of short fiction.

Notes:
1. Short story texts not included per copyright but are fairly common and easy to find.
2. Most resources could be used at any middle or secondary level, but content of some stories is not appropriate for all audiences (eg profanity and sexuality in Eggers, Diaz…). Check out the stories to see what is best for your learners. :)
