8.7A Volume of Cylinders, Cones, Spheres
Included: 18 Quiz-Quiz-Trade cards with 6 of each 3D objects tested in the Pre-Algebra 8th grade Texas Math TEKS.
This resource is intended to be a 10-15-minute refresher of finding radius from diameter. Rational number diameters have been given so that students must practice calculating the radius of rational numbers.
This resource can be used as a spiral review or a activating background information task before beginning instruction of calculating volume of cylinders, cones, spheres in a low stress cooperative learning environment.
Ideas for Use:
Guide students through a review of dividing a diameter in half to calculate the radius. Then supply students a card and allow them 2 minutes to calculate their own radius. After students have completed their calculations, begin the Quiz-Quiz-Trade activity from 10-15 minutes.
Guide students through each card individually in a small groups of (4-6 students) to ensure their grasp of the calculation while the remaining students perform the quiz-quiz-trade.
To increase depth of knowledge, have students calculate the squared radius and record it on a notebook page, leaving space for their sketch of their objects and later calculation of the object’s volume
