Engage eighth graders in solving this contextual problem that is 100% aligned to the common core standard 8.F.2. Students must determine the rate of change (slope) in both a graph and table and connect it to the overall context. They will eventually come to the realization that the problem is not as simplistic as it seems, as the answer depends on the time frame.
Cooperative learning idea: Organize students into teams of 4-5. Students work independently on each problem for a set amount of time. Students are numbered 1-5 at their teams. Starting with problem 1, the teacher calls a number. The student with that number stands up and explains to the team how they answered that question. After 2-3 minutes, call time and choose a new number to explain number 2. Continue until students have discussed all 5 problems. This holds each student accountable to be prepared to explain each answer.
