Get 4 cooperative learning activities aimed to take your students from an introduction to mastery of analyzing rates of change and initial values of different types of functions (common core standard 8.F.4). These activities will have students deeply engaged with one another and differentiation techniques are included to reach all levels of learners!
Included in this Product:
Intro the Standard
Slope of Graph with Different Intervals
This activity exposes students to the connection between slope of a graph and rate of change. They analyze graphs with varying intervals and find the slope of each. The slopes are connected to the context of the graph as students explore the meaning of the rates of change.
Dig into the Standard
Writing Functions and Contexts
As in the previous activity, students analyze only graphs--but now they must find the initial values along with the slope, and use both to write equations to model the functions.
Rate of Change Scavenger Hunt
No longer are the functions expressed only as graphs. Students explore tables, pairs of points, and stories in this fun scavenger hunt game that gets students out of their seats!
Master the Standard
Constructing Functions in Context
Students put it all together and find rates of change and initial values from a variety of functions. They write equations to model each and use their work to answer a high-level thinking question.
All activities include detailed teacher instructions and answer keys.
