PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Omega English Product contains all the lesson plans, Power Points, Hand-outs, Graphic Organizers, and other resources you’ll need to teach Unit 3 Code X (8th Grade): The Power of Art. This complete bundle is detailed, organized, and most importantly- print ready. All lesson plans highlight the Danielson Domains to ensure effectiveness. In addition, all lessons contain differentiation. All Omega English products are teacher/student tested and the creator of this package was rated Highly Effective. The author has attended several Code X PDs and participated in curriculum mapping, development, and implementation of Code X. Below is an in-depth description of all the packages included in this bundle.


The Power of Art Introduction Package- This includes a very detailed Common Core aligned lesson on the Introduction to Unit 3. It explores the essential question and introduces the texts. A Power Point is also included

Zebra Package:

A) Zebra First and Second Read Package
Includes 2 detailed Common Core aligned lesson on “Zebra.” The first lesson plan focuses on the first read of the short story. It contains a corresponding Power Point and a First Read Matrix Graphic Organizer for students. The second lesson focuses on the Second Read/Close Reading of the short story. It also contains a corresponding Power Point. It contains differentiated group work; thus, this lesson can be implemented regardless of what type of diverse learners you have in your classroom.

B) Assessment – Includes a 33 multiple choice assessment on the short story “Zebra.” Questions are text dependent and range from comprehension to text analysis.

C) Identifying Evidence Package – Includes a Common Core aligned lesson plan, Power Point, 3 differentiated graphic organizers, and a teacher checklist/conference sheet

D) Interactive Academic Vocabulary Package- A very detailed Common Core aligned lesson on the Academic Vocabulary in “Zebra.” It also includes a vivid Power Point with visuals that corresponds to the lesson and 2 differentiated graphic organizers. You also get free access to an interactive site that contains virtual flashcard created by Omega English. Link and password is included in the document. On the site students will listen to the word, practice spelling the word, match the word with the definition, and play several games using the word. You can also give the students the password to access these flashcards at home. This ensures that the needs of all audio, visual, and tactile learners are being meet.

E) Teacher Generated Graphic Organizer and Writing Prompt: Includes a graphic organizer that visually represents the relationship between Andrea and Zebra, and how it changes throughout the text. It helps students focus on textual evidence in order to support their responses. Writing prompt is also included
It can be used as a classroom activity, given for homework, used as differentiation, used for small group instruction, or for an extension activity. In provides a great foundation for the Performance Task.


F) Craft and structure of a letter Package- Includes a graphic organizer that corresponds to pages 167 in the grade 8 Code X curriculum. It allows students to visually organize the sections of the Mr. Wilson’s letter to Zebra and discuss the significance. This product can be used in class as part of a lesson, as an extension activity, or given as HW.


G) Key Ideas and Details Graphic Organizers Package- Includes
2 graphic organizers. They include a time line of important events and focuses on the significance of characters as they relate to the central idea.

Letters to a Young Artist Package

A) Academic Vocabulary Package: A very detailed lesson on the Academic Vocabulary in “Letters to a Young Artist”.” It contains the Academic Vocabulary listed on page 122, as well other essential vocabulary. This lesson is a 3 day lesson. It contains 3 different differentiated activities. One for each day. It also includes a Power Point, 3 graphic organizers, and access to an interactive site with flashcards. Link and password is included in the document.

B) First Read Package: Includes a very detailed Common Core aligned lesson on “Letters to a Young Artist”. Aside from general lesson plan components, it also contains original medial summary questions, differentiation, exit ticket, links to audio support, and a first read matrix worksheet. A corresponding Power Point is also included.

C) Second Read Package This includes a very detailed Common Core aligned lesson. This is a second read/close reading lesson. A Power Point is also included.

D) Identifying Evidence Package - This includes a very detailed Common Core aligned lesson. A vivid Power Point that corresponds to the lesson and an Identifying Evidence Graphic Organizer is also included.

E) Assessment Package: Contains a 15 question multiple choice quiz on the excerpt “Letters to a Young Artists” by Anna Deavere Smith. Questions rang from comprehension to analysis. An answer key is included.

F) Craft and Structure Package: Contains 2 vivid graphic organizers that analyze the structures of the 3 letters in the excerpt “Letters to a Young Artist.” It can be used as part of a lesson, as an extension activity, or given for H.W.

G) Central Idea Package: Contains a vivid graphic organizer that organizes the central idea of Smith’s letters and the significance of each. It can be used in your lesson, given for H.W., or used as an extension activity.


Collaborate and Present - Contains a 3 day Common Core aligned lesson plan on the Unit 3 Collaborate and Present section of Code X. Throughout this lesson students analyze evidence from both “Zebra” and “Letters to a Young Artist” that supports what it means to be a mentor, discuss what a mentor means to them, analyze the how mentors affect their own lives, and plan and deliver an artistic presentation. It includes a Power Point Presentation as well as 5 graphic organizers to choose from. In addition, a writing prompt with sentence starters for struggling students and a student sample is included.

Performance Task Package: Contains the lessons and resources you need in order to complete the Performance Task. It contains 2 detailed Common Core aligned lesson plans and Power Point Presentations that take students through the writing process (analyzing the model, gathering evidence, organizing ideas, drafting, and revision). In addition, it contains:
6 graphic organizers for different stages of the Performance Task, a revision sheet with sections for peer feedback, and a specific worksheet with sentence starters for struggling students
