One of the best management and motivation strategies I've come across in my classroom is teaching students how to write quality discussion questions about a given piece of text. That being said, Common Core standards put a definitive shift in focus to student's engaging with Text-Dependent questions, and these question starters reflect the specific categories of text dependent questions outlined by the common core.
Included in the preview are questions that relate to Key Ideas and Details, the first step on student's engaging with text. Beyond what's included in the preview are robustly structured question starters and potential follow up questions tailored to 'Vocabulary and Text Structure' as well as questions designed to help students 'Tackle Tough Sections.' All questions are notated with the relevant ELA standard.
Also included, at the end of the document, is a 'Question Quality Checklist' written in student friendly language to facilitate students being able to evaluate their own work.
These question starters could be easily used across any literary text at the 8th grade level, and could serve both classroom teachers looking to construct high quality Text-Dependent questions as well as students leading classroom or small group discussion.
