PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I want my students to learn vocabulary in to be better readers and writers, but what I learned was most curriculum simply asks students to memorize definitions. That is when I revamped my vocabulary activities to help students investigate the words and look at them differently.

Word Work Activities included in Packet:

1. Vocabulary Funny: Have students make a cartoon drawing out of one of the words they need to learn. Writing the word in an original sentence, creating a picture and coloring it will help them to remember how to use the word not just memorize the definition.

2. Vocabulary Web with Story: Student are introduced to a new word (or review a difficult word) in the web while at the same time reviewing previous words in a story or sentences.

3. Frayer Model (full page): The Frayer Model (FM) is a way of investigating words beyond the definition. Using the large FM is a great way of introducing a new or unusual word.

4. Frayer Model (3 per page): Once students understand how to use the FM, this organizer is great for a review or a little more independent work.

5. Frayer Model (2 pages, 5 per assignment with enrichment sentences): Use this one for students that understand how to use the FM and are ready for taking ownership of their words by putting them into their own sentences.

6. Vocabulary Preview: Use this graphic organizer to help students preview the words you will be studying. This allows students to call on prior knowledge and assess their understanding of the word prior to the lesson/unit.

7. Vocabulary Sketches: A day or two before the quiz or test, have students complete sketches. This will help students look at the word in a different way. As time allowed, we shared our sketches on the board in a Pictionary type game.

8. Study Plan: Students often need help organizing their study time. Have student complete a study plan to help them begin to understand what study strategies work for them and gives them a plan to try new methods of studying. Plan also includes a reflection piece after the test to assess how well they studied and/or used their plan.

9. Ways to Study Vocabulary: Have the students brainstorm ways to study vocabulary so they are not simply memorizing definitions. Once students have brainstormed ideas, give them the Ways to Study Vocabulary handout. I ask students to keep this in their notebook so they can refer to it at home. I also post it in the room.
