9- Day Chapter Book Close Read Lesson plan developed from
Freedom’s Wings: Corey’s Underground Railroad Diary Book One
By Sharon Dennis Wyeth
This Close Read of a longer book emphases rereading certain portions, focusing on author’s craft, specifically character development through the use of dialect. Students begin by reading information about slavery and the Underground Railroad from the Historical Note found at the back of the book. Then students explore a more personal perspective of slavery as the author uses a diary format to tell the story. Students will read for different purposes each day, with the emphasis on seeing how a character changes and develops over time. Text features, organization, and the author’s effective use of dialect will help students gain a greater understanding of slavery taken from a personal perspective. Text-based questions are also included with the 9-day lesson plan.
