Teaching phonics can be a little overwhelming if you aren't given a phonics program to follow. I have made 9 weeks of phonics materials. Included in each week are a power point for introducing and practicing the words, word cards for your word wall and an interactive notebook page. There are little videos embedded in the power points that help teach the rule. I usually teach 1 rule a week. On Monday I introduce the rule. I show them the power point and break down the rules in each word. Then we create our interactive notebook fold-able. I usually have them write as many words as they can that follow the rule around their notebook image. For example, when they make their magic e magician, I have them write at least 15 words around it. We often brainstorm the words prior to that and I write them on the board.
Other activities: write the room. They find all of the words that follow the rule in their notebook. I give them 5- 7 minutes and give a prize to the 3 students with the most words.
Silly story: Students write a silly story using as many words as they can that follow the rule.
Rule breaker or rule follower: I will show them different words and they decide if it follow the rules we are learning or not.
