OBJECTIVE: All students will be able to determine the length of a missing side of a right triangle, determine if given sides measures would determine a right triangle, and find the distance between two points on the coordinate plane.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Students would benefit from a working understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem. Students should be able to evaluate roots, approximate irrational roots, solve two step equations, and plot points in the coordinate plane.
STANDARDS DRIVEN: This is a lesson designed for students who have already had experience using the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will be primarily expected to determine if three side length would determine a right triangle, find the missing side of a right triangle, approximate irrational lengths of right triangles, and use their understanding of right triangles to calculate the distance between points on the coordinate plane. Students will be expected to extend this to developing the distance formula and understand how it relates to the Pythagorean Theorem. This lesson follows a lesson on classifying numbers into number sets and precedes a lesson on solving multi-step linear equations with no/infinite solutions.
